Why Straight Teeth Are Better for Your Health

Straighter teeth do more than create a beautiful smile. Your Park Avenue orthodontist can actually help to improve your health. Keep reading to find out how:

Straight Teeth Are Easier to Clean
If you want to optimize your oral health, it is important to perfect your cleaning routine. Straightening your teeth helps you make the most out of the time you spend brushing and flossing your teeth. When your teeth are straight, it is much easier to clean between them to remove food, plaque, and bacteria that might eventually lead to decay, cavities, or periodontal disease.

Straight Teeth Encourage Healthier Gums
On top of giving you better access when you clean your mouth, straight teeth also encourage healthier gums. If your teeth are crooked or unevenly spaced, your gums might not fit as securely around them as they should, which could lead to periodontal problems in the future. If you straighten your teeth, though, the gums can fit snugly around the teeth so they both remain healthy and in the best condition.

Straight Teeth Help Improve Your Overall Health
Your oral health has a big impact on your overall health. Bacteria and infections that start in your mouth can travel through your blood to other parts of your body. Periodontal disease can actually increase your risk for developing heart problems. It also makes it more difficult to control blood sugar levels and puts pregnant women at risk for delivering premature babies. If you straighten your teeth, you can lower your risk for other serious health issues.

Getting Your Smile Ready for Your Big Day

You will probably pose for more pictures during your wedding than you will on any other day in your life. If you want to look your best for these mementos of your special day, you should start thinking about improving your smile now. Use the following tips to make sure your teeth and gums are camera-ready on your big day:

Straighten Your Teeth
If you have issues with crooked or crowded teeth, it could take away from the aesthetic appeal of your smile. Work closely with an orthodontist to find a teeth-straightening treatment that will help you fix these issues and get a smile that you love to show off. When you start early, this orthodontic treatment will have the desired effect and leave you with a gorgeous smile in time for your wedding.

Step Up Your Oral Hygiene Routine
Make your newly straightened teeth sparkle by improving your daily oral hygiene routine. Make an effort to brush your teeth twice a day and floss them once a day to keep them clean and free from cavities. You might also want to look into a teeth-whitening treatment that will help you get the brightest, whitest smile in time for your wedding.

Avoid Foods and Drinks that Might Leave Stains
In the weeks leading up to your wedding, you might want to avoid certain foods and beverages that might stain your teeth and reverse your whitening efforts. Coffee, black tea, berries, red wine, cranberry juice, and soda can all stain your teeth and ruin their aesthetic appeal. Try to avoid these foods until after your wedding so you can show off a beautiful, clear smile.

Dr. David Seligman and the staff at Seligman Orthodontics can help you get your smile ready for your wedding. As the top orthodontist in New York City, Dr. Seligman can find the right way to straighten your teeth and improve your entire smile. What to Do In Case of Orthodontic Emergencies

Orthodontic emergencies, while rare, do happen. It’s important to know the proper course of action if you have something unexpected come up with your braces, and be sure to follow any instructions your orthodontist may have given you at the beginning of your treatment. Otherwise, follow these guidelines to handle most orthodontic emergencies:

Loose Brackets
Brackets can become loose or fall off the tooth completely when you experience trauma to the mouth, attempt to eat something crunchy or chewy, or rarely, when the adhesive fails. In most cases, the arch wire will prevent the bracket from leaving the mouth entirely, but it is important to get in to see your orthodontist as soon as possible to have the bracket reattached.

Displaced Wire
Occasionally, a ligature or bracket may loosen just enough to allow the arch wire to slide out of place. When this happen, the wire can poke and irritate the soft tissues in the back of one side of the mouth, resulting in moderate pain or sores. Sliding the wire back in place and tightening everything back up isn’t that difficult for your orthodontist, but you will need to schedule an appointment to have it done. Until you can get to the orthodontist, use orthodontic wax to cover the wire, or try to push the wire against the tooth gently with an eraser tip.

Sores, Irritation, and General Discomfort
While these situations are not considered true orthodontic emergencies, they can be troublesome when you’re experiencing them. Remember that there is always an adjustment period with new braces, as well as immediately after an orthodontic adjustment. Make use of orthodontic wax, warm saltwater rinses, and over the counter pain relievers as indicated by your orthodontist until your mouth makes the transition.

Your Guide to Common Orthodontic Terms

You will likely find your entire orthodontic experience to be more enjoyable if you understanding what is happening, why, and the final results it will bring. Some of the orthodontic terms your orthodontist may use include:

  • Brackets: these are the metal, acrylic, or ceramic appliances that your orthodontist cements to your teeth at the beginning of treatment. They hold the arch wire and help facilitate the movement of the teeth.
  • Ligatures: these are the tiny rubber bands or wires that wrap around the bracket and hold them tight between orthodontic appointments.
  • Arch wire: these are the wires that are threaded between the brackets over your teeth, and are what your orthodontist adjust to apply the right amount of pressure in the right areas for proper movement.
