Why Orthodontists Recommend the Damon System

Crooked teeth aren’t just embarrassing; they can also increase your chances of developing gum disease and other dental issues. While metal braces can correct malocclusions, they’re not much help in the embarrassment department. For swift and discreet orthodontic care, orthodontists recommend the clear, less painful, and more effective Damon System .

The Damon System is designed to achieve precise tooth positioning, allowing orthodontists to accurately predict how the system will work. Most patients who opt for the Damon System are finished with their treatment within eight months—a stark contrast to traditional metal braces, which often have a treatment time of 18 months or longer. Very few Damon patients require extractions or surgery before treatment, and the Damon System’s biologically sensible forces produce very little discomfort, making the whole treatment process more pleasant for patients and orthodontists alike.

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions about Orthodontic Care

If you are concerned about the appearance of your smile, you may be wondering if orthodontic treatment is right for you. While orthodontic care does improve the appearance of patients’ smiles by correcting misalignments, it is about more than just looks—orthodontic care aims to improve the overall function and health of the teeth and jaw. Here’s a look at some of the most frequently asked questions regarding orthodontic care .

questions or decision making concept

Is an Orthodontist Different than a Dentist?
Yes, an orthodontist is a specialist within the field of dentistry. Both dentists and orthodontists must obtain a Bachelor’s degree and then attend a four-year graduate program at a dental school that is accredited by the American Dental Association. After finishing this program, individuals who want to become  orthodontists  must then complete a two- or three-year residency program in orthodontics.

What Causes Orthodontic Problems?
Orthodontic problems can have a variety of causes. Oftentimes, orthodontic issues are genetic in nature. Common inherited problems include tooth crowding, gaps between teeth, and extra teeth. It is also possible for orthodontic problems to occur as a result of traumatic injuries, bad habits, or certain diseases. Missing teeth, crooked teeth, and misaligned bites are just some of the orthodontic issues that can develop.

Does My Child Need Orthodontic Care?
Only an orthodontist can determine if your child needs orthodontic care. You should bring your child to an orthodontic evaluation by the time he or she is age seven, whether you think that orthodontic treatment is necessary or not. The orthodontist will be able to evaluate your child’s teeth, determine if early orthodontic treatment is necessary, and let you know if your child might need orthodontic care as he or she grows.

What Are the Treatment Options?
Orthodontists have a range of treatment tools at their disposal. Traditional metal braces, headgear, clear dental aligners, and treatments like tooth extraction are all options that your orthodontist may use. The treatments your orthodontist recommends for you will depend on your specific orthodontic concerns.

Which Orthodontic Problems Are Most Common in Children?

People of all ages can have orthodontic problems , but some issues are more common during childhood. To find out which orthodontic problems are the most common among children, check out this video clip.

Bite problems, including cross bites, open bites, and overbites, are common among children. These conditions generally do not self-correct as a child grows, so orthodontic treatment is often necessary. Crowding is another orthodontic issue that many children experience, but this problem sometimes resolves itself as a child gets older.

It is important to bring your child to an orthodontist by the age of seven to determine if he or she might need early orthodontic treatment. If you would like to make an appointment with a top orthodontist in NYC, call Dr. David Seligman of  Seligman Orthodontics  today at (212) 988-8235.

Why Teens Should Consider Invisalign Treatment

Has your orthodontist recently determined that your teenager needs orthodontic treatment? If so, your teen may be lamenting the idea of having a “metal mouth” for the next several months or years. The good news is that Invisalign, a system which uses nearly invisible aligners to straighten the teeth, is available for teenagers. Continue reading to find out more about why Invisalign is a good orthodontic treatment option for teens.

Better Aesthetics
Traditional metal braces can have an impact on a person’s appearance and, as a result, hurt that person’s self-esteem. Your teenager can feel confident while  undergoing orthodontic treatment with Invisalign . The aligner trays are made of a clear plastic that is very difficult for others to see. Teens are able to speak and smile as they normally would while their teeth are moved into the correct positions.

Easier Care
Daily dental care is essential for your teenager’s oral health, but it becomes much more difficult to complete with traditional metal braces. With Invisalign, however, your teenager will be able to care for his or her teeth like normal. Your teen will be able to remove the aligner trays to floss and brush each day. Unlike traditional braces, which can easily trap food and other debris against the teeth, Invisalign trays can also be removed before meals.

Improved Comfort and Safety
Traditional metal braces can irritate the soft tissues of the mouth and can even cause severe injury during sports. If your teen falls down or receives a blow to the face while wearing metal braces, he or she may wind up with lacerations along the inside of the lips or cheeks. Invisalign, on the other hand, does not bother the inside of the mouth and will not increase the risk of oral injury during sports.

If you would like to find out more about Invisalign for teens, schedule an appointment at Seligman Orthodontics in NYC. Dr. David Seligman, the top orthodontist in NYC, can evaluate your teenager’s teeth and recommend the best orthodontic treatment option. To  find out more , call (212) 988-8235.

Tips for Cleaning Your Invisalign Trays

One of the best parts about Invisalign is that most people can’t tell that you’re wearing them unless they stand very close. However, these orthodontic devices  can become very visible if you allow them to become dirty.

All Invisalign aligners come with a cleaning kit. This pack includes a cleaning tub and specialty crystals that will not harm the plastic device. Use this kit as needed to keep your aligners order free and colorless. You can perform daily maintenance by brushing the aligners with your normal toothbrush and rinsing them with lukewarm water. Consult your orthodontist before using any harsh chemicals on the plastic, as unapproved cleaning agents may damage the aligners.
