Deciding to get orthodontic treatment is an important first step in getting a beautiful smile you’ll love to show off. If you’ve recently made the choice to start working on your smile, chances are that you have some questions about what to expect. There are three main stages of orthodontic treatment. Here is what you need to know.

Planning Stage
The first part of your orthodontic care might just be the most important. At this stage, your orthodontist will work with you to develop a treatment plan. He or she will use a combination of medical and dental evaluations, bite impressions, X-rays, photos, and computer-generated images to choose the right orthodontic treatment option for you. As you plan, your orthodontist will also consider things like your treatment goals and your preferences for treatment methods.

Treatment Stage
The second stage is when your actual treatment takes place. You will be fitted for whatever orthodontic device you’ve chosen, from metal braces to Invisalign, and you will learn about any special procedures you need to follow to keep your teeth in good condition. You will also learn how to care for your braces or aligners. Throughout your treatment, you will make periodic trips to your orthodontist’s office for adjustments and to ensure that your treatment is progressing as expected.

Retention Stage
The final stage of treatment lasts for a lifetime. The retention stage kicks in when you have achieved your desired results and your orthodontist fits you with a retainer to help you maintain those results. It’s important to follow your orthodontist’s retention plan carefully, or your teeth could shift back into undesirable positions.
